Movin’ On 2012 Recap: A Move Forward

Movin’ On 2012 was easily the best one Penn State has had in at least the last four years, speaking from experience. After a long line of lackluster headliners and poor or mediocre lineups, we finally got the well-balanced lineup we deserve. So how did it pan out?
Well, while little-known acts like David Mayfield Parade surprised the audience with great sets and rising stars like Young the Giant were equally well-received with incredible jam sessions, the headliners sealed the deal with an excellent show. Whereas Less Than Jake sounded washed up two years ago and The Spill Canvas was largely ignored by students before that, Ludacris pumped up the crowd with a strong set, despite DJ problems, and the Avett Brothers put on one hell of a show. But let’s start at the beginning.

Who are Young the Giant and The David Mayfield Parade? If you’re not the type who constantly needs up-to-the-second updates on the music industry, you might not know what to expect from Movin’ On’s openers. Young the Giant should be a fairly familiar name by now, especially if you caught my profile of the band a few months ago. Both groups are still up-and-coming artists who’s national attention is fairly fresh. Here’s what you can expect from each of them.

Who are the Battling Bands?

Movin’ On is less than a month away, so it must be that time again: time for the Battle of the Bands!
This year’s battle will feature 12 acts. There are a lot of folk-influenced groups competing, which is probably fitting considering one of the headliners is The Avett Brothers. Still, the lineup includes a house and dubstep DJ in Keegan Tawa, a first for Movin’ On Battle. There are also acts as diverse as ska and the ever-popular rock/reggae/hip hop fusion of Atlas Soundtrack. Here’s more information on each, in the order they will appear:

Album Review: “The Odd Future Tape Vol. 2” by OFWGKTA

Bewildering. Trippy. Abhorrent. Fantastic. Scary. Cool. Different. As usual, an incredibly diverse set of adjectives can be applied to an Odd Future production.
Most of all, though, the hip hop collective’s second major release is confusing. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to rate.

Album Review: WZRD

Grade: C+
Kid Cudi’s foray into rock with producer Dot da Genius isn’t bad, but it certainly won’t wow listeners. Upon first hearing about the project, the first thing so many Cudi fans surely thought was, “this will either be great or terrible,” as is usually the case when artists cross genres. Somehow, the WZRD duo managed to fall right in between those two extremes.

Live Bands Performing at THON

It’s that time of year again at Penn State: THON weekend. And that means essentially 46 hours of back-to-back music blasting from the loudspeakers of the BJC. One of the highlights are the many cover bands that will grace the stage. Here’s a rundown, in order of appearance, of who will be performing this year and what to expect from each band.

Music World Mourns the Death of Whitney Houston

Multiplatinum R&B singer Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel room Saturday, as reported by the L.A. Times and other media outlets. According to the reports, the cause of death is unknown at this time. She was found in a Beverly Hills hotel room she was staying in for the tribute to Clive Davis.

Album Review: “Tramp” by Sharon Van Etten

Grade: B
Sharon Van Etten’s third album represents a culmination in the evolution of her confidence. The voice on Tramp is much stronger than the one we heard on Epic and a far cry from the quiet murmurs of Because I Was in Love. The lyrical content of the music seems to have matured in much the same way. The timid girl who sang “Lately I’ve seen / confidence and grace / crawl in a ball / and fear I’ve lost my faith” in the song “I Fold” now repeats that she is alright on the track “We Are Fine” and belts out “You enjoy sucking on dreams,” calling out a former flame in “Serpents.”

Artist to Watch: Young the Giant

Indie rockers Young the Giant might not have made MTV’s list of artists to watch in 2012, but after making waves with their debut album in 2010 and a new one in the works, they’re definitely one of industry’s rising stars. Some Penn State students have even speculated the band might be one of Movin’ On‘s 2012 headliners, having been present on the festival’s surveys last semester.

Local Bands to Know: Flashback Forward

Student rockers Flashback Forward are tired of the same old, same old in State College. That’s why the band is trying to invigorate the local music scene with its own brand of hard rock, something members of the band say is missing here.
